During my Japan tour I am very much looking forward to visiting Hiroshima. Hiroshima is located on Japan’s Honshu Island which was largely destroyed by an atomic bomb during World War II. Today, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park commemorates the 1945 tragedy. In the park are the ruins of Genbaku Dome, one of the few buildings that was left standing near ground zero. Other prominent sites include Shukkei-en, a formal Japanese garden, and Hiroshima Castle, a fortress surrounded by a moat and park. I am told that although the lingering effects of the bomb are still visible, the region has made an impressive recovery and today it is a busy, prosperous city with a population of over a million people.
Also on my list is a trip to Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima which is a small island in Hiroshima Bay. Just offshore you can visit the Great Torii Gate which is a giant, orange structure partially submerged in the sea at high tide. It marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th century. I can’t wait to experience this historic city with its World Heritage sites and famous shrines not to mention sample the local culture and entertainment. Come and join me!
We still have spaces left and a trip to Hiroshima is available to book as part of the VU package options for Japan 2019. Email sales@vultd.co.uk or call our Sales team on 01225 788880 to build your dream Japan holiday.
